Gawler Microlights owner and manager Rob Hatswell (C.F.I.) spent over five years flying and instructing at Strathalbyn before deciding to build a separate school at the Gawler Airfield to bring the thrill of flight to the Northern regions of Adelaide and South Australia.

Rob has extensive experience and knowledge to provide the best service of training and products available for the fun of microlighting.

Major Adventures

In 1996 Rob, and three other trike pilots with passengers embarked on the cross desert flight to Birdsville starting at the base of the Flinders Ranges in Hawker in South Australia . The entire trip including a few drinks at the Birdsville Races took 8 days. No ground support was required as each trike was self sufficient carrying Tent, food, fuel, oil and clothing, etc.

In Early 1997 Rob, with other trikers, planned and flew the first "Great River Safari" which involved joining up with 50 Trikes in total at Wangaratta in Victoria and then most continued on to follow the River Murray with numerous stops through to the Murray Mouth in South Australia.

In Mid 1998 Rob was privileged to fly for Airborne Windsports (the only manufacturer of Trikes in Australia) in Florida USA to demonstrate their aircraft at one of the largest Air shows in the World called Sun 'n Fun.

In Early 2001 Rob was selected with 8 other instructors to assist Airborne in New Castle, NSW to train 18 Israelies to learn to fly in 10 days.

In September 2001, Rob once again was asked to conduct some instruction by Airborne Windsports but this time on his own in Beijing, China. The visit lasted for one month in which many students enjoyed the new experience of Trike flying. The lessons continued with many more students, on the beach in the South of China for the month of April 2002. China is now an established and important export for Airborne.
